Yes, I know that is quite the dramatic title. I don’t mean it in an “it’s so fluffy, I’m going to die!” sort of way, or even a “your candidate didn’t win the presidential election” way. What I am referring to is the death of what it means to be human- the death of human nature.
This past week the question was posed to me: How does porn affect the ways women view women and men?
My answer: Women are sex objects. Men are sex objects.
That is what I learned from watching porn.
I realize that this is a seemingly simple conclusion. There are lots of smaller nuanced things I could pull out such as: Men are more sexually aggressive and dominant than females. Women enjoy being sexually submissive. Women need to be “good” at giving sexual favors. The list could go on and on.
But the trick to this question is that there are all kinds of porn out there and that the type of porn you watch absolutely affects your view of women and men in different ways. If I were to continue the above list, some “lessons” would contradict others because they all came from different types of porn.
The one lesson I have found that remains constant is that people are objects.
Men treat women as sex objects. Women treat men as sex objects.
Men treat men as sex objects. Women treat women as sex objects.
At the end of the day, isn’t that perhaps the most important and damaging lesson porn teaches?
God created us as human beings in His image (Genesis 1:27). We are valued, treasured, and loved because we are human and He has called us his children (1 John 3:1)! We have free will, souls, emotions, a sense of right and wrong. Porn attacks these very basic truths. It obliterates the humanity of the people on screen. They are nothing more than objects.
Porn depicts nothing but carnal desire. lust. physical pleasure. fake intimacy.
Being human is so much more than that. We were created as so much more than that.
What does being human mean to you?
